Day One: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Your guide and driver will meet you in the arrivals hall at Ulaanbaatar Chinggis Khan Airport and transfer you to the hotel for check-in. The plan for today is quite flexible, as your flight arrival time will influence things, and you will probably want some downtime to relax and catch up on sleep. You may also need to sort out exchanging money and other practical things. For any early arrivals who want to hit the ground running, we can fit in a morning visit to Gandan Monastery - enter the temples, including that of the Migjid Janraisig with its huge golden Buddha statue. In the old temple complex, listen to the chanting ceremonies which happen mid-morning. There may then be time to fit in another museum - perhaps the Zanabazar Arts Museum or the Dinosaur Museum in the old Lenin building. If it suits you better to start the city tour in the afternoon, then we suggest meeting your guide in the hotel reception for a walk across the expansive Sukhbaatar Square to the National History Museum which is a great introduction to the country's past. At a designated time, venture south towards Peace Bridge to a small theatre to experience an intimate performance of traditional music and dance by the Tumen Ekh Ensemble, followed by a welcome dinner at one of favourite Mongolian restaurants.

Day Two: Terelj National Park - Turtle Rock

Your guide and driver will pick you up from the hotel at a time suitable for you. We will embark on an eastward journey towards Terelj, a destination renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance. Along the way, we will stop at the revered Turtle Rock, a sacred formation that holds cultural and spiritual significance in Mongolian folklore. As you climb the rock, you'll be immersed in its ancient energy and awe-inspiring views. Next, we will visit the Aryabal Meditation Temple, nestled at the head of the valley. This temple provides a serene and peaceful environment for meditation and reflection. It is a testament to Mongolia's rich spiritual heritage and offers an opportunity to connect with its ancient traditions. Terelj National Park, with its stunning landscapes and rugged beauty, has long been a popular weekend getaway for locals and tourists alike. As we traverse the main valley, we will venture off the beaten path, leading you to a secluded ger camp just before Terelj Village. This serene setting allows for a deeper immersion into the natural surroundings. In the afternoon, we will embark on a trail-walk from the camp, ascending to a nearby hill-top. From this vantage point, you will be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the area, encompassing the vastness and grandeur of the Mongolian wilderness. Immerse yourself in the history, spirituality, and natural wonders of Terelj as we explore its remarkable landscapes and discover the secrets it holds.

Day Three: Riding Alongside the Terelj River

After breakfast, meet the local horse guide who will provide the horses for your trek. While preparations are being made and the pack-horses are being loaded, take the opportunity to visit a local family's ger and experience their warm hospitality. Then, set off on your journey by riding northwards alongside the picturesque Terelj River. The trail will lead you through narrow valleys with steep hills on either side before the landscape opens up as you turn northeast into the Ar Khurkh Valley. This valley serves as the autumn and winter encampments for the Terelj herdsmen. While exploring this area, keep an eye out for wildlife such as ibex, although they are known to be cautious creatures. More commonly seen are foxes and wolves, who typically avoid human presence. Enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility of the surroundings as you embark on this memorable horseback adventure.

Days Five and Six: Riding Toward Altan Ulgii

Upon reaching Altan Ulgii, camp will be set up at the foothills, providing a cozy sanctuary amidst the wilderness. Spend a memorable evening under the starlit sky, savoring delicious meals prepared in the wilderness kitchen tent. The following day, mount your horse and embark on a breathtaking ride up Altan Ulgii, taking in panoramic views of the surrounding vistas. Day Seven: Ride to Terelj Valley and Homestay with Local Family

Today you will ride back into the main Terelj Valley for your final day in the saddle. By mid-afternoon, arrive at the homestay of a local nomadic family, where tonight you will enjoy some local hospitality, delicious home-cooked fare, and a welcome bed in your cosy guest ger. Meals will be a mix of simple but hearty Mongolian and western-style dishes, all prepared by either your guide or a dedicated cook depending on the size of your group and the length of your trip. In order to set you up for a big day, think eggs, bacon, porridge, bread and jam, and to refuel in the evenings, stews, stir fries, dumplings, and soups will be on the menu. Depending on your itinerary, you may call in at a Nomadic family for lunch or have a picnic lunch. Water filters will be sent on the trip for your use. Mongolians are renowned for their hospitality, something that will become apparent as soon as you arrive. By way of greeting, you are likely to be offered snuff and tea from your hosts when you arrive into a family's ger. It is an everyday ceremony in Mongolia steeped in history and nomadic tradition, and one must follow a certain protocol when accepting this welcome, such as accepting with your bowl of steamy salted milk tea with both hands and not screwing the top of the snuff bottle firmly shut - be sure to ask your guide to explain before you arrive!
